Material Construction Workshop

After learning about various ways of attaching materials together, from sewing and stitching to drilling and wiring, everyone continued their explorations of constructing their own material. Findings are being shared through an evolving, collaborative wall of ideas and materials explorations.

The Pliable, Flexible Plane!

Today we explored the possibilities of limits! Teams had one hour, one sheet of brown paper, a specified length of masking tape and one City Paper to fashion one wearable piece (or multiple). We talked about how limits or parameters can help to push us towards thinking in new ways about materials, including breaking through our own preconceived ideas about how materials should and can be used. We also talked about the power of play and experimentation in order to find inspiration, as well as working from an initial idea.  Groups shared reflections about the challenges and benefits of working collaboratively, and strategies for working as a team. We are off and running!

Welcome to Fashioning Art!

The impulse to gather and collect materials, then weave, or bind them together to construct structures and surfaces is one shared by animals and peoples around the world. The origins of clothing and costume seem to be equally rooted in our need for shelter/protection and desire for ornamentation. This project is our first leap into ‘fashioning  art’, working with the materials in our immediate environment to construct a protective  and/or ornamental wearable surface or structure.
